What Causes Low Testosterone?

January 30, 2026

Low testosterone can be related to aging, medical conditions, lifestyle factors, or issues affecting hormone production. A medical evaluation and lab testing at Lifeline Walk-In Medical in Torrance, CA are required to determine the cause.

Expanded Explanation

Testosterone is a hormone primarily produced in the male testes (testicles). It plays an important role in energy levels, sexual health, muscle mass, mood, and overall well-being. When testosterone levels fall below a healthy range, men may begin to notice physical or emotional changes that affect daily life.

At Lifeline Walk-In Medical, our licensed medical providers help patients in Torrance and the surrounding South Bay area understand potential causes of low testosterone through clinical evaluations and lab testing.

Common Causes of Low Testosterone

Aging

  • Testosterone levels naturally decline with age
  • Levels often begin decreasing after age 30
  • Some men experience a more significant decline that leads to symptoms

While age-related changes are common, symptoms should still be medically evaluated rather than dismissed.

Medical Conditions

Certain health conditions may interfere with testosterone production, including:

  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Metabolic disorders
  • Chronic illnesses
  • Conditions affecting the testes or pituitary gland

Some prescription medications may also impact hormone levels. A provider at Lifeline Walk-In Medical can review your medical history to determine whether these factors may be contributing.

Lifestyle Factors

Daily habits can influence hormone balance over time, such as:

  • Chronic stress
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Poor nutrition

Addressing lifestyle factors may support overall health, but testing is still necessary to determine whether testosterone levels are clinically low.

Hormonal or Gland-Related Issues

The endocrine system plays a critical role in hormone regulation. Issues such as:

  • Pituitary gland disorders
  • Testicular injury or dysfunction
  • Hormonal imbalances

can affect testosterone production and require medical evaluation.

Why a Medical Evaluation Matters

Symptoms of low testosterone can overlap with other conditions, including thyroid disorders, depression, or sleep-related issues. That’s why a clinical evaluation and lab testing are essential before considering treatment.

At Lifeline Walk-In Medical in Torrance, CA, our providers follow clinical guidelines to accurately diagnose low testosterone and determine whether treatment options, including testosterone replacement therapy, may be appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Low Testosterone

What are the most common symptoms of low testosterone?

Symptoms may include low libido, fatigue, fewer erections, mood changes, decreased muscle mass, and loss of body or facial hair. Symptoms vary from person to person.

Can lifestyle changes improve low testosterone?

In some cases, improving sleep, managing stress, exercising regularly, and maintaining a healthy weight may support hormone balance. However, lab testing is still important to identify the underlying cause.

Does low testosterone only affect older men?

No. While testosterone levels naturally decline with age, younger men in Torrance and nearby communities can also experience low testosterone due to medical or lifestyle factors.

When should I consider getting tested?

If symptoms are persistent or affecting your quality of life, a consultation with a medical provider can help determine whether testing is appropriate.

Dr. Anulika Chilaka opened Lifeline Walk-in Clinic in Torrance a year ago, and she said privately owned clinics like hers will not be impacted by these cuts. “It is concerning when people are losing access to care. It is always concerning to anyone from a health care standpoint, but we want people to know we are here for you,” said Dr. Chilaka. According to the County Health Department, federal funding accounts for almost 50% of its budget. Because of a more than $50 million cut in federal, state, and local funding, the county will close locations starting on February 27. Due to continued uncertainty, the statement released by the health department noted there could be additional service disruptions going forward. Leaving family-owned clinics like Dr. Chilaka’s filling the gap. “We are open, we don’t have the same restrictions, we can do as much as we can, we can spend as much time with our patients, we can do more than perhaps some other places may be able to,” said Dr. Chilaka. In a statement sent to Spectrum News by LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, she said in part: “The Department of Public Health’s decision was based on low patient volume and the clinic’s limited scope of care. I will continue to monitor DPH’s closure plan to ensure patients are fully supported through referrals to nearby community-based clinics and other transition resources so they continue receiving the care they need.” The clinics that are stopping services offered things like vaccines and STD testing. According to the health department, these locations will still offer non-clinical services and programs.
