May 20, 2025
Sleeping Troubles

Sleep is a vital part of maintaining both physical health and emotional well-being. But for millions of people, restful sleep is difficult to come by. Insomnia—defined as persistent difficulty falling asleep, staying asleep, or waking too early—can impact every aspect of daily life. Whether it’s occasional or chronic, untreated insomnia can lead to fatigue, mood disorders, weakened immunity, and more serious long-term health complications.

At LifeLine Walk-In Medical & Mental Health Nursing Clinic, we understand how frustrating and exhausting insomnia can be. That’s why we’re here 7 days a week to help you get to the root of your sleep difficulties and work with you to build an individualized treatment plan.

Common Symptoms of Insomnia

If you’re experiencing insomnia, you might notice:

  • Difficulty falling asleep at night
  • Waking up during the night and struggling to return to sleep
  • Waking up too early and feeling unrested
  • Daytime fatigue or sleepiness
  • Difficulty concentrating or remembering things
  • Irritability, depression, or anxiety
  • Increased errors or accidents

These symptoms can persist for a few days (acute insomnia) or become a long-term problem (chronic insomnia). Either way, early evaluation is key to effective treatment.

What Causes Insomnia?

There’s no single cause of insomnia. Often, it’s the result of multiple factors working together. Some of the most common contributors include:

Stress and anxiety:

Worries about work, school, finances, or health can keep your mind active at night.

Depression and other mental health conditions:

Emotional distress often disrupts sleep patterns.

Medical conditions:

Chronic pain, breathing difficulties, acid reflux, and more can interfere with restful sleep.

Lifestyle habits:

Irregular sleep schedules, caffeine or alcohol use, and screen time before bed can all affect your sleep.

Medications:

Some prescription drugs can disrupt sleep cycles.

Poor sleep environment:

Noise, light, and uncomfortable bedding can prevent deep sleep.

Identifying the underlying causes of insomnia is crucial to finding a lasting solution.

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County Public Health Department is ending clinical services at seven of its 13 locations throughout the county. Dr. Anulika Chilaka opened Lifeline Walk-in Clinic in Torrance a year ago, and she said privately owned clinics like hers will not be impacted by these cuts. “It is concerning when people are losing access to care. It is always concerning to anyone from a health care standpoint, but we want people to know we are here for you,” said Dr. Chilaka. According to the County Health Department, federal funding accounts for almost 50% of its budget. Because of a more than $50 million cut in federal, state, and local funding, the county will close locations starting on February 27. Due to continued uncertainty, the statement released by the health department noted there could be additional service disruptions going forward. Leaving family-owned clinics like Dr. Chilaka’s filling the gap. “We are open, we don’t have the same restrictions, we can do as much as we can, we can spend as much time with our patients, we can do more than perhaps some other places may be able to,” said Dr. Chilaka. In a statement sent to Spectrum News by LA County Supervisor Kathryn Barger, she said in part: “The Department of Public Health’s decision was based on low patient volume and the clinic’s limited scope of care. I will continue to monitor DPH’s closure plan to ensure patients are fully supported through referrals to nearby community-based clinics and other transition resources so they continue receiving the care they need.” The clinics that are stopping services offered things like vaccines and STD testing. According to the health department, these locations will still offer non-clinical services and programs.
